Site overview

Barwon Prison is a maximum-security prison located in the Barwon Prisons Precinct. We are expanding capacity at Barwon Prison by 243 beds with new accommodation and upgrading the visitor centre and entry building, light industries building and men’s shed. The existing programs and medical building will also be expanded and refurbished, and internal fencing will be built.

The project is expected to create 140 jobs during construction, with targeted investment in local employment, social enterprises and jobs for disadvantaged Victorians.

Officially opened in 2006, Marngoneet Correctional Centre is a medium-security prison located in the Barwon Prisons Precinct. Upgrade works on site will expand the capacity of the prison by 72 beds and provide a 36-bed accommodation unit and 12-bed specialist intervention unit. We are also upgrading the prisoner reception area and providing modifications to the existing laundry, kitchen and healthcare facilities.

The project at the Marngoneet Correctional Centre is expected to create 250 jobs during construction and a range of opportunities for local contractors.

Middleton Prison is a restricted-minimum security prison near Castlemaine, operating as an open campus within a secure perimeter. We are delivering a new 39-bed accommodation block, upgraded recreation building and commercial kitchen. A number of security upgrades will also be implemented at Middleton including the construction of a new sally port, additional fencing and upgrades to CCTV coverage and the facility's perimeter detection system.

The project is expected to create 165 jobs during construction, including around 50 roles in the Bendigo area as well as a range of opportunities for local contractors.

Hopkins Correctional Centre is located in Ararat and provides accommodation for sentenced and un-sentenced prisoners with protection requirements in an open campus environment, combining community-style prison design with the Better Living Model case management model for prisoner management.

The capacity of the prison will expand by 94 beds, and a new management unit, program buildings and refurbishments will be added to the site as well as fencing upgrades and landscaping works.

The project at Hopkins Correctional Centre is expected to create 47 jobs during construction and a range of opportunities for local contractors.

The Metropolitan Remand Centre is a maximum-security remand facility located at Ravenhall. Capacity of the prison will be expanded by 212 beds through the construction of two new accommodation blocks and supporting amenity areas. Upgrade works will also focus on recreation areas, prison program facilities and a redeveloped prisoner reception building.
