We’re creating more than 1,000 construction jobs building the new prison at Chisholm Road with 300,000 work hours for apprentices, trainees and engineering cadets.

David is an apprentice carpenter working on the project, getting his start in construction after a previous 10 year career in the hospitality industry.

After working with family members on a property renovation, David realised he wanted a career change and joined Chisholm Road after studying at Victoria University Polytechnic.

“I like to be more hands on, and I wanted to learn how to create things and to be proud of the job that I do” he says.

Having been in the role for just a few months, David says there is plenty to learn, but his team is there to help.

"“I like to be more hands on, and I wanted to learn how to create things and to be proud of the job that I do.”"

“Because I’m still learning these skills, people are willing to teach me and willing to give me time which is really good.”

“At the moment I’m focusing on becoming a fully qualified carpenter and from there, hopefully a Leading Hand, Foreman, Project Manager – after that, who knows!”

Location

The new maximum security prison is being built in the Barwon South West Region near Geelong, in the vicinity of the existing prison precinct which includes Barwon Prison and Marngoneet Correctional Centre.
